The internet has become a powerful tool for learning and research, however it also comes with a very serious risk; internet safety.  So, with technologies on the rise, how do we as teachers, create safe online environments for our students? Everyday, schools are faced with the ever-increasing challenge of guiding students to become responsible digital students and it is important that schools invest time in creating small teams of staff to oversee the approach to cybersafety.

Cyberspace schools have developed a teacher's guide to internet safety. Within this document they outline a number of suggestions that schools can implement to monitor students cyber safety.
  1. Form a cyber team.
    • Tech savvy persons, familiar with internet apps used by students.
    • A welfare staff member.
    • Management representative (Principal/Deputy Principal)
    • Curriculum Designer
    • student and parent members
  2. Revise current cybersafe behaviours.
    • Liaise with staff, parents and relevant state and territory education authorities about current cybersafety issues.
    • Research current school resources, for example e-smart schools.
  3. Develop codes of conduct and policies.
  4. Conduct regular staff development days and provide curriculum resources and updates.
  5. Educate parents and students about risks and relevant possible solutions.
These measures are just some of the ways that students and teachers can become cybersafe, but! they are not foolproof. Monitoring as much as possible the content accessed and following up with regular updates is a best key solution in this case. It won't stop cyber break-ins, but it will minimise any threat that might occur. The idea is to shape these ideas, attitudes and experiences into an ethical value within the classroom.
Basic ethics suggests that all materials used are appropriately referenced unless they belong to you, even when it comes to images and copying, of which law states that education providers can copy up to 10% or onw whole chapter of a text. The two most significant legal and ethical issues you will face involve copyright law and internet safety. With the rise of cybersafety issues on the rise, protecting your online reputation is now a key concern for teachers. With the rise of social media, and instant upload and dowmloads, being aware of your online presence and how you interact with it is paramount in ensuring a positive reputation. Remember, everything online is permanent.

Managing one’s digital identity is a skill , so to speak, that we need to learn and teach our kids and students about (Med Kharbach, 2014). The use of copyright images and materials are able to be restricted according to the owner's wishes. This is important for us as facilitators of learning, as well as our students. As teachers we should model and teach ethical and legal behaviours. Intellectual Property (IP) covers a wide range of rights that protect the product of original and creative effort, including copyright, patents, industrial designs and trademarks. Copyright makes up a major part of the department’s IP. The Copyright Act 1968 (Copyright Act) gives copyright owners exclusive rights over how others may use their work subject to statutory licences and exceptions available under the Copyright Act (Department of Education, Training and Employment, 2014).  All teachers work within policies that are developed from legislation. Whilst the ongoing consideration of safety potentially limits the freedom of online exploration, it must be adhered to and well managed.
